“Fly Patterns of the Dakota Fly Fishers” Flies Wanted!

The Dakota Fly Fishers has always been a lake fly fishing club.  At the time our club formed, there was little information available about fly fishing lakes. Fly pattern information was also lacking. We, therefore, filled the information and fly pattern void with our own techniques and fly patterns. More good fly patterns have originated here than anywhere in the country. Where we have borrowed fly patterns from other areas, they have been the cream of the crop. To serve as a fund raising item, the Dakota Fly Fishers have voted to create a CD of our favorite patterns.

To put this whole thing together, I am going to need a lot of help. For starters, I need flies to photograph. I have some patterns that Mark Olinger sent me and I have many of my own but we need to get at least 75 fly patterns and their variations tied. If you can help out with this I would appreciate it. If possible, I would like to get three flies of each pattern that you send. You have to remember that when I go to shoot the flies, any flaw will show. Providing 3 flies will give me a little choice and allow me to pick the best fly for the CD. All the flies collected will go into a fly box that we will present for raffle at the FLIPPR banquet. Also, please provide the name of the fly and provide a material list. If you have a short story to go with it, please send that, as well.

Some other things that we will need are as follows:

Fish and fishing pictures

People with editing skills to review the stories

People with computer skills to format it

At this point, I am planning to do the photography and photo editing. I have a 5MP camera with excellent macro features.

At this time, I would like to concentrate on trout patterns. Once this is complete, I hope to come up with a volume 2 which will contain salmon, pike, bass and panfish flies. I retire at the end of this year and working on a volume 2 will keep me out of trouble.
